Door handles and locks on the Gold Coast

Handles pitted by salt air, deadbolts that won't throw, and builder-basic levers that wobble after a year. We replace and fit door hardware across the Gold Coast from our base in Hope Island.

Gold Coast

Hardware that lasts by the water

Door hardware has a hard time on the Gold Coast. Close to the Broadwater, the canals and the beach, salt in the air pits chrome and brass finishes, stiffens lock mechanisms and seizes hinge pins. A handle that looked fine at handover can be rough and spotted a few years later, and a deadbolt that's started to bind is usually only getting worse. Choosing hardware made for coastal conditions is the difference between doing the job once and doing it again in two years.

The jobs also follow the kind of home. In newer estates around Coomera and Helensvale, it's often swapping light-duty handles that have worked loose for something solid, and setting them at the same height through the house. In Southport and Surfers Paradise rentals and holiday apartments, owners want sturdy hardware that copes with constant use, and sometimes a battery-powered keypad lock so guests don't need a key. In older brick homes, new levers often need old knob holes filled first.

We're in Hope Island, so the northern Gold Coast is close, and we head to Southport, Surfers Paradise, Robina and Burleigh Heads on planned visits. Before new hardware goes on, we check the door hasn't dropped and the latch lines up with the strike, because that's usually why locks feel stiff. Rekeying and master key systems are locksmith work, and anything that needs mains power goes to a licensed electrician.

What we do

Lock and handle jobs on the Gold Coast

  • Swapping corroded hardware

Pitted handles, stiff locks and rusted hinges on doors near the water replaced with stainless or other coastal-grade hardware, with old screw holes plugged so the new set fixes firmly.

  • Upgrading builder-basic handles

Light-duty levers in newer homes that droop or come loose, replaced with sturdier sets throughout the house and fitted at a consistent height so they line up from room to room.

  • Keyless locks for holiday lets

Battery-powered keypad and smart locks for Gold Coast holiday rentals, so guests can check in without a key handover. We check the door thickness and existing holes suit the lock before you buy.

  • Deadbolts on front and back doors

Deadbolts added to solid doors that only have a knob lock, a common gap in older homes and rentals. We cut the bolt hole and strike cleanly into the frame so the bolt throws all the way.

  • Locks that stopped lining up

Deadbolts and latches that only work if you lift or push the door, often after a house has settled or a door has swollen in summer. We fix the door alignment first, then adjust or re-cut the strike.

  • Closers on screen and side doors

Closers fitted to screen doors and garage-access doors that slam in the afternoon sea breeze, adjusted so the door shuts gently and still latches.

Local conditions

Why Gold Coast locks and handles fail

  • Salt on the mechanism

Salt doesn't just mark the outside of a handle. It gets into the latch and lock body, where it holds moisture and corrodes the moving parts. Spraying with oil can make it worse by trapping grit, so a lock that's stiff near the water often needs replacing with a coastal-grade one.

  • Doors that move with the seasons

In humid summers timber doors swell, and in newer homes frames shift as the house settles. Either one pulls the latch out of line with the strike. Fixing the door is usually the real cure, and it saves you buying a new lock you didn't need.

  • Homes with lots of keys around

Rentals, holiday lets and recently bought homes often have keys out there that nobody can account for. New lock sets that come keyed alike, or a battery keypad lock, are simple options. Restricted key systems and rekeying are a locksmith's job.

FAQ

Locks & door handles questions

What door handles last longest near salt water?

Solid stainless steel handles and locks generally hold up best in coastal homes, especially on doors facing the water. Plated finishes look good at first but tend to pit and peel in salt air. We'll suggest hardware suited to how exposed each door is, inside and out.

Can you fit a keypad lock to my holiday apartment?

Yes, if it's a battery-powered model designed for a standard door. Some apartment entry doors are controlled by the body corporate, so check with your building manager before you buy. Send us the lock model and a photo of the door edge and we'll confirm it suits.

Can you replace every handle in my house in one visit?

Usually, yes. Tell us how many internal and external doors you have and whether you want privacy locks on bedrooms and bathrooms. We can supply matching sets or fit ones you've chosen, and we fill and patch any old holes the new roses don't cover.

My deadbolt is hard to turn. Do I need a new lock?

Not always. On the Gold Coast it's often the door that has moved in the humidity, so the bolt rubs on the strike. We check and fix the alignment first. If the lock itself has corroded inside, which is common near the water, we'll replace it.
