New hardware on old Brisbane doors
Hardware jobs in Brisbane often start with a door that has outlived several sets of locks. On Queenslanders and older timber homes, front doors may still carry an old mortice lock with a large keyhole or a surface-mounted rim lock, while the internal doors have a mix of knobs added over the years. Fitting modern lever sets to these doors takes care. Panelled doors have narrow stiles, and old cut-outs, filled holes and earlier lock positions all have to be worked around.
In 1970s to 90s brick homes around Sunnybank, Springwood and Carindale, the job is more often an upgrade: original brass or chrome knobs swapped for levers, a deadbolt added to a back or side door, or a closer on the screen door. In newer Logan estate homes, it's usually builder-grade hardware that has worked loose and latches that stopped catching once the house settled. Before fitting anything, we check whether the door has dropped, because a new lock won't work properly on a door that rubs on its strike.
We're in Hope Island, so a Brisbane visit is planned ahead and booked on one of our set days, roughly 30 to 60 minutes away depending on the suburb. Hardware suits that well, because it's easy to do every door in one trip. Count your doors, photograph each type of handle and the edge of the door, and tell us whether you've chosen hardware or want us to supply it. Rekeying and restricted key systems are locksmith work, but we can fit sets that come keyed alike.
What we do
Lock and handle work we do in Brisbane
Levers on older panelled doors
Modern lever sets fitted to old timber doors, choosing hardware that suits the narrow stile and the existing mortice. Old holes are filled and patched so the new roses and plates sit flat.
Replacing old front door locks
Worn or keyless mortice and rim locks on Queenslander and post-war front doors replaced with a lock suited to the door. If you'd like to keep the period look, we'll talk through hardware styles made for older doors.
Deadbolts for back and side doors
Back, laundry and side doors on older brick homes often have only a knob lock. We add deadbolts to solid doors, and suggest a solid door first where the existing one is hollow-core and can't hold a bolt securely.
Whole-house handle changes
Every handle in the house replaced in one visit, set at a consistent height, with the old screw holes and marks made good. A simple update that changes how a 70s or 80s home feels to live in.
Screen door closers
Closers fitted to hinged screen doors on verandahs and back doors, so they shut gently in the afternoon wind rather than slamming or being left open for the mozzies.
Hardware for rentals
Broken handles, loose latches and worn locks in rentals across Logan, Slacks Creek and Beenleigh replaced between tenants. Keyed-alike sets mean fewer keys for the owner and property manager to keep track of.
Local conditions
Why Brisbane locks and latches play up
Doors that drop with the house
When Brisbane's clay soils swell after a wet spell or old stumps settle, frames shift slightly and the latch stops meeting the strike. Plenty of 'broken' locks are fine and just need the strike re-set, so we check the alignment before suggesting new hardware.
Bayside air
In bayside suburbs like Wynnum and Manly, sea air and humidity are harder on cheap hardware, which can tarnish and stiffen. Better quality finishes hold up longer near the bay, and a dry lubricant keeps lock bodies turning freely.
Old doors with many lives
An older front door may have had several locks fitted over its life, each one leaving a hole. Where the old cut-outs are large, we patch them with timber rather than filler, so the door stays strong around the new lock and the repair holds under paint.

FAQ
Locks & door handles questions
Can you fit lever handles to my old Queenslander doors?
Usually. The main limits are the width of the door stile and where the old lock sat. We choose hardware that suits the door and patch any old holes the new handle won't cover. If you'd like to keep a period look, there are lever and knob styles made for older doors.
Is it worth keeping my original front door lock?
If it still works and you have a key, it may be worth keeping for its looks, with a deadbolt added for security. If it's worn, missing its key or won't lock reliably, a new lock is the practical choice. We'll look at it and tell you honestly.
Can you fit a deadbolt to a door with glass panels?
Often, yes, as long as there's enough solid timber in the stile for the bolt. Where there's glass close to the lock, some people choose a deadbolt that needs a key on both sides, but that means you need a key to get out in an emergency. We'll talk through the options for your door and household.
How many handles can you change in one Brisbane visit?
Usually a whole house, as long as the hardware is on hand and the doors don't need major adjustment first. That's why we ask you to count the doors and send photos before we book: it lets us bring the right hardware and plan the day properly.
