Custom doors in Brisbane

A front door made for your opening and your house. We design, order and hang custom timber doors for Queenslanders, post-war homes and renovated brick houses across Brisbane's south and east.

Brisbane

A door that suits the house behind it

Many Brisbane entries simply aren't standard. Queenslanders and interwar homes in Coorparoo and Camp Hill often have a front door flanked by sidelights or topped with a fanlight, set in an opening that's taller or wider than any stock door. Post-war homes in Holland Park and Mount Gravatt tend to have plainer entries that owners want to lift during a renovation. And in 1970s to 90s brick homes from Carindale to Sunnybank, a new front door is one of the quickest ways to change how the house looks from the street.

On an older home, the aim is usually a door that looks like it belongs. We look at the panel layout of the internal doors, the architraves, the age of the house and any original glass, and design a door that sits with them, whether that's a traditional panelled door, a VJ-style door or something simpler. On a renovated or brick home there's more room to change the look: a wider timber entry, vertical grooves, a pivot door under a deep porch, or reeded glass sidelights.

A custom door takes a few planned visits, which works well with the distance. We're based in Hope Island, roughly 30 minutes to an hour from most Brisbane-side suburbs, so we measure and design on one visit, have the door made, then come back to hang it once it's ready. We don't rush custom work or promise dates we can't keep. You'll get a realistic timeframe when the order goes in, along with one fixed quote for the door and the install.

What we do

Custom door work we do in Brisbane

  • Queenslander front doors

Panelled and VJ-style front doors made to the exact size of an older opening, with proportions and mouldings to suit the house. We size the door to the frame you have now, not the one it was when the house was built.

  • Doors with sidelights and fanlights

Doors designed to work with existing sidelights and fanlights, or new ones designed in, to bring light into the long central hallways of older Brisbane homes. Clear, frosted or reeded glass, depending on how much privacy you want.

  • Statement doors for brick homes

A wider or taller timber entry for a 70s to 90s brick home that's being updated, often paired with new sidelights. It's one of the most visible changes you can make to the front of the house.

  • Pivot doors under cover

Wide pivot doors for renovations and new entries with a deep porch or verandah to shelter them. We look at how exposed the entry is to Brisbane's storms before recommending one.

  • Matching internal doors

New internal doors copied from the surviving ones in an older home, for openings a stock door would need cutting down too far, or where a missing door needs replacing to match the rest of the hallway.

  • Frames made to suit

Where the original frame is rotten, termite-damaged or too far out of square to work with, a new frame is made with the door so the two fit each other. Any termite activity is treated by a pest controller first.

Local conditions

Designing a door for Brisbane homes

  • Verandahs give you options

A front door tucked under a deep Queenslander verandah is sheltered from most of the weather, so an oiled timber finish or a pivot door is a realistic choice. A door on a small brick porch facing west gets far more sun and rain, and a painted finish usually lasts longer there.

  • Frames that move with the seasons

Brisbane's clay soils and older stumps mean frames shift through the year. A custom door is made to fit closely, so we check and correct the frame first and leave the right clearances for summer, rather than sizing it so tight it binds in February.

  • Character neighbourhoods

If your home is in an older, character street, it's worth checking with council before changing the front of the house. We'll tell you if we think your new door or sidelights may need approval and point you to council before anything is ordered.

FAQ

Custom doors questions

Can a custom door work with my existing sidelights?

Usually. If the sidelight frames are sound, we design the door to suit them and fit it into the existing frame. If the old frame is rotten or you want different glass, we'll talk through rebuilding the whole entry as part of the order.

Is a custom door worth it for a brick home?

It can be, if the entry matters to you. A stock door is fine for a standard opening, but a custom door lets you choose the width, timber, glass and style, and it's the change people notice first from the street. We'll give you an honest view on whether custom or a good stock door suits your house and budget.

How many visits does a custom door take in Brisbane?

Usually two or three: one to measure and talk through the design, sometimes a check before the order goes in, and one or more to hang and finish the door. We plan these on our Brisbane days, so it helps to start early if you have a deadline like a sale or the end of a renovation.

Can you copy an old door from a photo?

A photo helps a lot with the style, but we still need to measure your actual opening. Send photos of the door you like, or of the original if it survives, plus a photo of the front of the house, and we'll talk through how close we can get.
