Gyprock in houses that weren't built with it
A lot of Brisbane plasterboard work happens in homes that started life with something else. Queenslanders and older timber homes were lined with VJ boards, fibrous plaster or fibre cement sheeting, and renovations often add gyprock alongside them. Highset homes in Mount Gravatt, Holland Park and Coorparoo get built in underneath, and the new rooms are framed and sheeted from scratch. In 1970s to 90s brick homes, it's more often a new stud wall to split a big room, or re-sheeting a room that's been stripped back.
Older framing needs a carpenter's eye before the first sheet goes up. Hardwood studs in older homes are often uneven in size, irregularly spaced and out of plumb, so we pack and straighten the frame, or add new framing, so the gyprock finishes flat. Where new board meets an old VJ or fibrous plaster wall, we plan the join so it's reinforced and falls at a corner or opening where we can. If old sheeting is coming off a house built before about 1990, it needs testing for asbestos before anyone removes it.
Plasterboard jobs run over several visits: frame, sheet, then coats of setting compound with drying time in between, which stretches in a humid Brisbane summer. From our Hope Island base, Springwood is around 40 minutes and Coorparoo closer to an hour, so we plan each stage around our set Brisbane days and give you the visit schedule with the quote. Electricians and plumbers need to do their part before the sheets go on, and we can coordinate that with them.
What we do
Plasterboard work we do in Brisbane
Build-under rooms
Non-structural walls framed and sheeted under highset homes, ceilings lined and cornice fitted. We'll tell you if your build-under may need approval and point you to council, and use moisture-resistant board where rooms sit close to the ground.
Splitting a room in two
A new stud wall to turn a large bedroom or rumpus room in a 70s to 90s brick home into two, with a doorway, sound batts if you want them, and the walls set ready for paint.
Replacing old linings
Renovation sheeting in older homes where tired fibrous plaster or damaged linings are being replaced. Any sheeting that could contain asbestos is tested first, and removed by an asbestos specialist if needed, before we start.
Extensions that meet the original house
New gyprock in an extension finished cleanly against the original walls and ceilings, with control joints where the old and new parts of the house are likely to move differently.
Garage linings
Garages in Logan and Rochedale estate homes lined to make a cleaner gym, workshop or storage space. If you're turning a garage into a bedroom or living area, we'll tell you if it may need approval before we start.
Ceilings in renovated rooms
New plasterboard ceilings where an old ceiling has come down, screwed off to the framing above and finished with cornice or a square set edge. In older homes we check the framing above first, as it isn't always evenly spaced.

Reactive clay and control joints
Houses on Brisbane's reactive clay move more than most. Long runs of new plasterboard, and joins between old and new parts of a house, need control joints or reinforcement so the movement goes where it's meant to rather than cracking across the middle of a wall.
Below the house
Build-under rooms sit close to the ground and can be damper than the rooms upstairs, especially after heavy summer rain. We use moisture-resistant board where it makes sense and keep the bottom edge of the sheets clear of the slab so they can't wick up water.
Older linings and asbestos
Post-war homes and many houses built before about 1990 may have asbestos in some wall, ceiling or eave sheeting. We won't cut, drill or remove old sheets until they've been tested, and we'll tell you if something looks like fibro rather than gyprock.

FAQ
Plasterboard installation questions
Can you put gyprock over old VJ walls?
It can be done, but it's not always the best idea. VJ walls are a big part of an older home's character, and lining over them changes the depth at door and window trims. Where the boards are only damaged in places, repairing them is often better. If you do want them covered, we'll talk through how we'd handle the trims and joins.
Do I need a different board for a build-under laundry?
For a laundry or anywhere that gets damp, moisture-resistant plasterboard is the better choice. Wet areas in a bathroom also need waterproofing, which is done by a waterproofer before tiling. We'll talk through which rooms need which board when we quote.
Can you match the cornice in the rest of my house?
We look for the same profile, or the closest one available. In older homes with fibrous plaster cornice, an exact match isn't always possible, so we'll show you the options before choosing. Sometimes square set suits a build-under better than trying to copy the cornice upstairs.
Do you take the old sheeting away?
We take away our offcuts and any old gyprock we remove. Old sheeting that might contain asbestos is different: it needs testing first, and if it's positive, removal by an asbestos specialist before we start work on that area.
