Brisbane

Storage for houses built before built-ins

Many older Brisbane homes were built for freestanding furniture. Bedrooms in Queenslanders and post-war homes in Coorparoo, Holland Park and Mount Gravatt often have no built-in robe at all, or a small one squeezed into a corner later. A built-in wardrobe in these rooms has to suit tall ceilings, VJ or fibrous plaster walls, floors that may slope, and window and door trims sitting right where the robe wants to go. We cut each panel to the actual line of the wall and ceiling, work around the trims, so the robe looks like it was always there.

Homes from the 1970s to the 90s around Sunnybank, Springwood and Carindale usually have a robe in each bedroom, but it's often a single rail and shelf behind mirrored sliding doors. Refitting the inside with double hanging, shelves and drawers gives you far more storage, and the doors can stay if they still run well. In Logan and Rochedale estate homes, robes and walk-ins are often basic builder fit-outs that are easy to rework. Linen cupboards, pantries and study shelving are part of the same work.

We're based in Hope Island, so Brisbane wardrobe jobs are planned around our set days, with Beenleigh around half an hour away and Carindale nearer an hour. A built-in robe usually means a measure-up visit, then the build and install, so we'll give you the visit plan with the quote. Send photos of the space, rough measurements and what you need to store, and we'll start from there.

What we do

Wardrobes and shelving we build in Brisbane

  • Robes for older bedrooms

New built-in wardrobes in Queenslander and post-war bedrooms that never had one, scribed around uneven walls and ceilings. We'll talk through door styles that suit the age of the house.

  • Mirror robe refits

Original 80s and 90s robes behind mirrored sliders stripped back to the shell and refitted with shelves, drawers and double hanging, keeping the doors if they still slide smoothly.

  • Build-under bedrooms

Built-in robes for new bedrooms under a highset home, planned alongside the new walls so the robe sits neatly in the room rather than being squeezed in afterwards.

  • Walk-ins in estate homes

Basic builder walk-in robes in Logan and Rochedale homes reworked with shelving, shoe storage and hanging space sized to how you actually use them.

  • Linen cupboards and pantries

Adjustable shelving in linen cupboards and pantries, often replacing original shelves that have bowed or were spaced with no thought for what goes on them.

  • Shelving on older walls

Alcove, study and living room shelving fixed securely in older homes, finding the framing behind VJ boards or fibrous plaster so the shelves can hold real weight.

Local conditions

Building robes in Brisbane homes

  • Walls that aren't straight

Older Brisbane walls have moved with the clay and the seasons, and a robe built square against a wall that isn't leaves gaps. We scribe end panels and fillers to the real wall and ceiling line, so the robe fits tight from floor to ceiling.

  • Humidity inside robes

Brisbane's humid summers can bring mould to clothes in closed robes, especially on outside walls and in build-under rooms. A small gap behind the back panel, slatted or open shelving and vented doors all help air move. We'll suggest what suits your room.

  • Tall rooms in older homes

Older homes often have tall ceilings, so a floor-to-ceiling robe gives you a lot of high storage. We usually add top cupboards for things you don't need every day, so the main hanging space stays within easy reach.

FAQ

Wardrobes & shelving questions

Can you build a wardrobe in a Queenslander without damaging the VJ walls?

Yes. We fix into the framing behind the boards, scribe the robe to the wall rather than cutting the boards back, and keep fixings to a minimum. If the robe ever comes out, the wall can be patched with matching boards.

Can you build a robe in a room with a sloping floor?

Yes. We level the base of the robe rather than relying on the floor, then scribe the kickboard to the floor so the line looks neat. The doors then hang and slide properly, even though the floor beneath them isn't level.

Do you build linen and pantry shelving as well as robes?

Yes. Linen cupboards, pantries, laundries and study alcoves get the same planning: shelves spaced for what you store, adjustable where it helps, and fixed so they don't bow. It's worth adding them to a robe job, as one Brisbane visit can cover several spaces.

Can you fit a robe around a window or door?

Often. In older bedrooms, the best wall for a robe sometimes has a window or door close by. We can return the robe around a window, stop it short of the architrave, or fit a lower section under the window. We'll mark out the options on site so you can see them.
