Patch and paint in Brisbane

Repairs that disappear once they're painted. We patch and paint the walls, ceilings, doors and trims that go with our repairs, in Brisbane homes of every age, from VJ walls to new gyprock.

Brisbane

Making a repair disappear in an older home

Patch and paint on the Brisbane side is often harder than it looks, because older homes rarely have one simple paint system. A Queenslander's VJ walls may carry decades of oil-based enamel and acrylic layers, post-war homes often have glossy kitchens and hallways, and 1970s to 90s brick homes can have a different colour or sheen in every room after years of touch-ups. Before we paint, we work out what's already on the wall, so the new coat sticks and the sheen matches.

Older paint needs care. Homes painted before about 1970 may have lead in the older layers, so we don't dry-sand old paint back until we know what's there, and we'll suggest testing if a job means disturbing a lot of it. Oil-based enamel, common on older doors, trims and VJ walls, also needs the right primer before acrylic paint will hold on it. Skipping that step is why some touch-ups peel.

Our painting goes with our own repairs: a patched wall, a repaired ceiling, a new door or trims we've fitted. It's not a whole-house repaint service. We drive up from Hope Island, anywhere from half an hour to an hour depending on the suburb, and book Brisbane work on set days. Filler and sealer need drying time before paint goes on, so most patch-and-paint jobs here are planned over two visits, and we'll set those dates with you when we quote.

What we do

Patch and paint work we do in Brisbane

  • VJ walls after timber repairs

New or replaced VJ boards primed and painted to match the rest of the wall, with paint worked into the grooves so the repair doesn't show as a flat patch in a ribbed wall.

  • Walls in brick family homes

Patched gyprock walls sealed and painted from corner to corner in homes around Sunnybank, Springwood and Carindale, matching the existing colour and sheen as closely as we can.

  • Ceilings after storm damage

Ceilings repaired after a summer leak, sealed with a stain blocker so the old water marks don't bleed back through, then painted to match the rest of the room.

  • Doors and trims over old enamel

Doors, architraves and skirting in older homes primed properly over the old enamel before painting, so the new paint holds instead of peeling off the gloss underneath.

  • Rental repairs

Patched and painted walls in Logan, Slacks Creek and Beenleigh rentals, using the colour on file with the property manager where there is one, or a colour-matched sample where there isn't.

  • New walls and build-unders

New plasterboard walls we've built, primed and painted to match the rest of the house, so a build-under room or new wall ties in with the rooms around it.

Local conditions

Paint and Brisbane weather

  • Humid drying days

Brisbane's humid summer weather slows down how fast filler, sealer and paint dry. Painting too soon over damp compound causes flashing and bubbling later. We allow for the weather, which is part of why we plan patch-and-paint over two visits.

  • Sun-faded walls

Walls in rooms that catch Brisbane's strong afternoon sun fade faster than the rest of the house, so the colour in the original tin may no longer match. Painting the full wall from corner to corner hides the difference far better than spot touch-ups.

  • Mould in damp corners

Bathrooms, laundries and build-under rooms can grow mould on walls and ceilings through a humid summer. We clean and treat it and use a suitable primer before painting, but if it keeps coming back, the cause is usually ventilation or a leak, and that needs fixing first.

FAQ

Paint & plaster questions

Is my older house likely to have lead paint?

If it was built or painted before about 1970, the older layers may contain lead. You can't tell by looking, but a test can confirm it. For small patch repairs we avoid dry sanding old layers, and if a job means disturbing a lot of old paint, we'll suggest testing first.

Can you paint VJ walls?

Yes. VJ walls need more care than flat walls, because paint builds up in the grooves and runs easily. We prime any bare timber, work the paint into the grooves, and match the sheen on the rest of the wall, which in older homes is often higher than on modern walls.

Why is the paint peeling off my old doors?

Usually because acrylic paint has gone straight over old oil-based enamel without the right primer, so it never bonded properly. The fix is to remove the loose paint, prepare the surface, prime it with a product made for going over enamel and repaint. We do this on doors and trims we're repairing or rehanging.

Can you do the painting in the same trip as other repairs?

Yes, and on the Brisbane side that's the best way to do it. We do the repairs on the first visit, then come back once everything has dried to sand, seal and paint. Adding a few more patches or a door to the same list is usually better value than a separate trip later.
