Finish carpentry

The details are where carpentry shows

Most people notice carpentry when it's done badly: an architrave with an open mitre, skirting that doesn't meet the floor, a batten that's slightly out of line with the rest. Good carpentry goes unnoticed because everything just looks right. That comes from measuring twice, cutting clean and setting out the job before the first piece of timber is fixed.

Timber batten screens are a good example. A stair screen or room divider can have dozens of battens, and every one has to be plumb, evenly spaced and fixed solidly at the top and bottom. We set out the spacing to suit the opening so there's no odd gap at the end, use concealed fixings where we can, and leave the timber ready to oil or paint.

We also take on the small structural jobs that need a licensed carpenter: replacing a rotten stud or bottom plate, framing a new opening in a non-load-bearing wall, or fixing a soft verandah board on a Brisbane Queenslander. If the job touches a load-bearing wall or needs an engineer, we'll tell you before anything is cut.

What we do

Carpentry we do

  • Timber batten screens

Stair screens, room dividers and feature walls in blackbutt, spotted gum or pine, set out evenly and fixed so they stay straight.

  • Architraves & skirting

New or replacement architraves and skirting boards, with tight mitres, neat scribes to uneven floors and every nail hole filled.

  • Small framing jobs

New openings in non-load-bearing walls, rotten studs and plates replaced, and timber framing for nooks, niches and built-ins.

  • Queenslander timber repairs

Soft verandah boards, rotten weatherboards and tired window sills replaced and matched to the existing timber.

  • Stair treads & steps

Loose, split or worn timber treads replaced or re-fixed so they sit firm and stop creaking.

  • Window & door trims

Sills, reveals and trims fitted after renovations or window replacements, ready for your painter or finished by us.

Call a carpenter when…

  • Skirting or architraves have come loose, split or been damaged by water
  • You want a batten screen or feature wall but don't want gaps that look off
  • A verandah board or stair tread feels soft when you step on it
  • There's rot at the bottom of a wall frame, often near a bathroom or door
  • You're renovating and need trims finished properly after the trades leave
  • You want an opening widened or a new doorway framed

What affects the price

  • The timber you choose: pine, blackbutt, spotted gum or another hardwood
  • How much needs setting out and cutting on site
  • Whether old timber has to be removed first
  • Painting, staining or oiling the finished work
  • Patching plaster or making good around the new work

Send us a photo, a rough size and what you have in mind, and we'll come back with a clear fixed quote.

FAQ

Carpentry questions

What's the difference between a carpenter and a handyman?

A carpenter is trained and licensed in timber construction, from framing to finish work. A handyman covers a wide range of small jobs around the house. We're both: a licensed carpenter who also takes on handyman jobs, so the timber work is done to a trade standard.

How much space should there be between battens?

There's no single right answer. It depends on the batten size, the look you want and how much light or privacy you need. We can mark out a couple of options on the wall so you can see the spacing before anything is fixed.

Can you take out a wall or make a doorway bigger?

For non-load-bearing walls, often yes. If the wall carries load from the roof or the floor above, it needs an engineer's design first, so we'll check the framing and tell you if you need one. We don't do structural engineering ourselves.

Can you match old skirting or architraves in a Queenslander?

Often, yes. Some older profiles are still available, and others can be matched closely by combining standard mouldings. Send us a photo of a cut end or the profile and we'll tell you what's possible.

Do you do the painting after the carpentry?

Yes, as part of the carpentry job. We can fill, sand and paint new trims, battens and patched areas so the job is finished properly. For a full repaint of the house, you're better off with a dedicated painter.
