Fitted properly
Good hardware only works if it's fitted right
A new handle or deadbolt should feel solid and work smoothly every time. When it doesn't, the hardware is rarely to blame. A latch slightly out of line with the strike, a lock body sitting in a mortice cut too shallow, or a door that has dropped a few millimetres is enough to make a good lock stiff and unreliable. So before any new hardware goes on, we check the door and fix any drop or misalignment first.
Changing handles is one of the easiest ways to freshen up a house, but older doors often carry the marks of previous hardware: different hole sizes, oversized cut-outs and screw holes in the wrong spots. We fill and patch those, cut new mortices cleanly, and make sure roses and plates sit flat against the door. When we're doing every handle in the house, we set them at a consistent height so they line up from room to room.
We fit and replace deadbolts, deadlocks, entrance, privacy and passage sets, pull handles, door closers and door stops. Battery-powered smart locks are fine too, but anything that needs mains power has to be wired by a licensed electrician. Rekeying and restricted key systems are locksmith work, so if you want new locks to work with your existing keys, we'll point you to a locksmith or fit sets that come keyed alike. We do this work in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, from Hope Island and Helensvale to Southport.
What we do
Hardware we fit
Lever sets & knobs
Passage, privacy and entrance sets on internal and external doors, set at an even height through the house.
Deadbolts & deadlocks
Added to front, back and side doors, with the bolt hole and strike cut cleanly so the bolt throws fully.
Entry & pull handles
Long pull handles and entrance sets on timber and pivot front doors, fixed through so they never work loose.
Door closers
Closers on screen doors and garage-access doors, adjusted so the door shuts gently and latches every time.
Latch & strike adjustment
Latches that don't catch, rattle or need a slam, realigned so the door clicks shut without effort.
Stops & small parts
Door stops, hinge pins, striker plates and wardrobe or cupboard handles, replaced while we're there.
Time for new hardware when…
- The key is stiff or has to be jiggled before it turns
- Handles are loose, drooping or wobble on the door
- The latch only catches if you slam the door
- Your front or back door only has a basic knob lock
- You've moved in and don't know who still has keys
- You're updating the look and want matching handles throughout
What affects the price
- The hardware itself, and whether we supply it or you do
- Whether new holes or mortices need cutting, or old ones filling
- The door: solid timber, solid-core or hollow-core
- Adjusting a dropped door before the new hardware goes on
- How many doors, and whether the locks need to be keyed alike
Tell us how many doors and send a photo of the current handle and the edge of the door. If you've already picked hardware, include the product details so we can check it suits.
FAQ
Lock and handle questions
Will new handles cover the old holes in my door?
Not always. Old knobs and locks often used bigger or differently placed holes than modern lever sets. We check the hole sizes and positions first, and fill, patch and paint wherever the new rose won't cover.
Can you add a deadbolt to my front door?
Yes, on most solid timber and solid-core doors. Hollow-core doors aren't strong enough to hold a deadbolt securely, so we'd suggest a solid door on any external entry. We cut the bolt hole and strike neatly into the frame so the bolt throws all the way.
Do you rekey locks?
No. Rekeying and restricted key systems are locksmith work. We can fit new locks that come keyed alike, so one key opens the front and back doors, or point you to a locksmith if you need your existing keys matched.
Can you install a smart lock?
Yes, if it's a battery-powered model made to fit a standard door. We check your door thickness and existing holes before you buy. Anything that needs hardwiring has to be connected by a licensed electrician.
My lock is stiff. Does it need replacing?
Often it doesn't. A stiff lock usually means the door has dropped and the bolt is rubbing on the strike, or the lock needs a clean and a dry lubricant. We fix the alignment first and only suggest a new lock if the old one is worn out.
Can you fit a closer to my screen door?
Yes. A closer stops a screen door slamming in the wind or being left open for the mozzies. We fit it to suit the door's weight and adjust the speed so it closes gently and still latches.
