Keep the bugs out
Let the breeze in and keep the mozzies out
In a Queensland summer, fly screens earn their keep. They let the breeze through on humid nights and keep out mosquitoes, midges and flies. But mesh goes brittle in the sun, pets push through it, and frames bend when they're knocked or pulled out for cleaning. A small tear soon becomes a hole big enough for anything to get through.
Most damaged screens don't need replacing. If the aluminium frame is straight, we re-mesh it: pull out the old mesh and rubber spline, stretch new mesh tight and roll in fresh spline so it sits flat without ripples. Bent or broken frames, cracked corners and screens that never fitted properly in the first place can be remade to size.
For doors, we fit new flyscreen doors to sliding glass doors and hinged entries, and fix the ones you already have: new rollers on sliding screens, closers and latches on hinged screens, and new mesh after the dog has been through it. If you have pets, pet mesh is a much tougher vinyl-coated mesh that stands up to claws and paws. We work across the Gold Coast, including the canal homes of Hope Island and Paradise Point, and across Brisbane.
What we do
Fly screen work we do
Window screen re-meshing
Torn, sagging or brittle mesh replaced in the existing frame with new spline, pulled tight and flat.
New window screens
Screens made to measure for windows that never had one, or where the old frame is bent or broken.
Flyscreen doors
Sliding screen doors for glass patio doors, and hinged screen doors for front and back entries.
Screen door repairs
New rollers, latches, closers and mesh for screen doors that drag, rattle or won't stay shut.
Pet mesh
Heavy-duty mesh on doors and low windows where dogs and cats push, scratch or jump up.
Fine & midge mesh
Finer mesh for homes near canals, mangroves and wetlands, where midges and sandflies get through standard mesh.
Your screens need attention when…
- There are tears, holes or gaps where the mesh meets the frame
- The mesh has gone brittle and crumbles when you touch it
- The screen door drags, jumps its track or won't close
- Screens are bent, loose or fall out of the window frame
- Pets have pushed through or clawed the bottom of the door
- You're still getting bitten inside with the windows screened
What affects the price
- Re-meshing an existing frame or making a new screen
- The mesh: standard, pet mesh or fine mesh
- The size of the screen, and whether it's for a window or a door
- Screen door hardware like rollers, closers, latches and handles
- How easy the screens are to reach, especially upstairs
Count your screens and send a photo of each damaged one with rough measurements. We'll quote them all together so it's done in one go.
FAQ
Fly screen questions
Is it worth re-meshing, or should I replace the screen?
If the frame is straight and the corners are solid, re-meshing is usually the better value and looks as good as new. If the frame is bent, corroded or broken at the corners, a new screen makes more sense. We check each one and tell you.
What's the difference between standard mesh and pet mesh?
Standard fibreglass mesh is light and easy to see through, but a dog or cat can push straight through it. Pet mesh is a thicker vinyl-coated polyester that stands up to claws. It's a little less see-through, so we usually keep it to doors and low windows.
Can you fit a flyscreen door to my sliding glass door?
Usually, yes. Most aluminium sliding doors have a track for a screen door alongside the glass door. We measure the opening, check the track, and fit a screen door with rollers and a latch to suit.
Why does my screen door keep coming off its track?
Worn rollers, a bent bottom track or a door out of adjustment are the usual reasons, and sand in the track makes it worse. We replace the rollers, clean and straighten the track, and adjust the door so it stays on.
Do you install security screens?
Our work is fly screens: insect mesh and pet mesh in aluminium frames. Steel and stainless security screens are a specialist product supplied and fitted by security screen companies, so we'll tell you if that's what you need.
How do I clean fly screens without damaging them?
Lift them out if you can, brush off the dust with a soft brush, then wash gently with mild soapy water and rinse. Avoid pressure cleaners, which can stretch or tear the mesh and pop it out of the spline. Let them dry fully before putting them back.
