Most holes in plasterboard walls come from everyday life: a door handle with no stop, a bed pushed against the wall, a TV bracket pulled out. Hardware-store filler is fine for a tiny hole. On anything bigger it shrinks, cracks or leaves a bump you see every time the light hits the wall.

So we repair it the way the wall was built. For larger holes we cut back to a clean square, fix a backing piece behind, screw in new plasterboard and tape the joins. Then a base coat, a top coat and a light sand, each feathered out wide so the repair sits flat with the wall, ready for sealer and paint.

Cracks are different. A hairline crack above a door or along a sheet join is usually ordinary house movement, so we rake it out, tape it and re-set it. Wide, growing or stepped cracks can point to a structural problem, which is a job for an engineer, and we'll tell you straight if that's what we see. We fix walls across the Gold Coast and Brisbane, from units in Southport to family homes in Carindale.

What we do

Plaster repairs we take on

  • Holes and dents

Door handle holes, furniture knocks and fist-sized damage, patched with new board where filler alone won't hold.

  • Cracks and joins

Hairline cracks, cracked corners above doors and windows, and sheet joins that have opened up, raked out, taped and re-set.

  • Popped screws and nails

Fixings that have pushed through the surface, re-fixed into the frame and covered so they stop showing.

  • Old fixings and wall plugs

Holes left by removed TV brackets, shelves, curtain rails and picture hooks, filled flush before the wall is repainted.

  • Damaged corners

Chipped or dented external corners re-beaded and set straight, which is common in hallways and around stair openings.

  • Section replacement

Where a whole area is damaged, we cut the sheet back to the studs and fit a new section, set to match the wall around it.

Time to fix that wall when…

  • Filler you've already tried has cracked, sunk or left a lump
  • A crack keeps reappearing in the same spot after it's painted over
  • Screw heads are popping out in a line along the wall
  • You're moving out of a rental and want the walls back how they were
  • The plaster feels soft or crumbly, which usually means a leak to find first
  • You've moved a TV or shelves and there's a patchwork of holes left behind

What affects the price

  • How many holes or cracks there are, and how big they are
  • Whether filler will do or new plasterboard has to be cut in
  • How flat it needs to be: walls in strong side light need extra care
  • Whether we paint after the repair or leave it ready for paint
  • Access, such as high stairwell walls or rooms full of furniture

FAQ

Plaster repair questions

Can you fix a hole from a door handle?

Yes. Small ones can be patched over a backing piece, and larger ones get a new piece of plasterboard cut in. We can also fit a door stop while we're there so it doesn't happen again.

Why does the same crack keep coming back?

Usually because it was only filled, not taped. The house keeps moving with the seasons, and filler alone can't flex with it. We rake the crack out and bridge it with tape before setting it, which holds far better. If a crack is widening or steps through brickwork, get an engineer to look at it first.

Is it better to patch the wall or replace the whole sheet?

Most damage can be patched so you'll never find it, which is quicker and cheaper than a new sheet. We'd only suggest replacing the sheet when the damage is spread right across it, the board has been wet, or there are so many old patches that new board gives a better finish.

How long does a plaster repair take?

Each coat of compound has to dry before the next one goes on. Depending on the size of the repair, it might be finished in a day or need a second visit once it's dry. We'll tell you which on the quote.

Do I need to move furniture before you start?

Just clear about a metre in front of the wall if you can. We bring drop sheets, cover the floor and anything nearby, and clean up the dust before we leave.
