Built from the frame up
A good deck starts underneath the boards
The boards are what you see, but the subframe decides how long a deck lasts. Footings, bearers and joists need to be level, fixed properly and kept clear of wet ground, with enough airflow underneath for the timber to dry out after rain. We set out every new deck from the frame up, then lay the boards with even gaps so water runs straight through.
Pool decks need extra care. Boards are scribed to follow the curve of the coping, the deck falls away from the water, and nothing is left proud to catch bare feet. Merbau is the favourite around pools for its colour and hardness, and we also build in spotted gum, blackbutt and other Australian hardwoods. Under Queensland's pool safety standard, a deck can't reduce the height of a pool fence or give a child something to climb, so we plan the deck around your fence from the start.
Plenty of tired decks don't need replacing. Many we see in Gold Coast and Brisbane backyards just need loose boards re-fixed, a few rotten ones swapped, a full sand and fresh oil. We check the frame first and tell you straight whether restoring is worth it. Higher decks, or ones attached to the house in certain ways, may need building approval or a certifier. We'll tell you if your deck needs approval before any work starts.
What we do
Deck work we take on
New timber decks
Ground-level and raised decks in merbau and Australian hardwoods, built on a level, well-fixed subframe with evenly spaced boards.
Pool decks
Boards cut to follow the shape of the pool, fixed flush so there's nothing to catch bare feet, and laid to drain away from the water.
Deck repairs
Loose and cupped boards re-fixed or replaced, rotten joists and bearers swapped out, and wobbly steps made solid again.
Sanding & restoration
Grey, weathered boards and old flaking finishes sanded back to clean timber, with lifted nails punched down or replaced with screws.
Replacing boards
Split, rotten or badly cupped boards cut out and replaced with matching timber, so you keep the deck and lose the problem boards.
Re-oiling & coating
Decking oil or coating applied to clean, dry timber to bring the colour back and protect the boards from sun and rain.
Your deck needs attention when…
- Boards feel soft or spongy, or bounce as you walk across them
- Nail heads have lifted and catch feet, toys or the broom
- The timber has gone grey and splits or splinters easily
- Water sits on the boards instead of running through the gaps
- Boards have cupped, twisted or pulled away from the joists
- The steps or the whole deck move when you lean on the edge
What affects the price
- The size, height and shape of the deck, including curves around a pool
- The timber species and board width you choose
- Whether the subframe is new, reused or partly replaced
- Pulling up and taking away an old deck
- Sanding, oiling or coating, and how many coats
- Site access, and whether the deck needs building approval
Send a few photos of the area or the old deck, with rough measurements, and we'll come back with a clear fixed quote.

FAQ
Deck questions
Does my deck need building approval?
Some do. The height of the deck, whether it has a roof and how it's attached to the house can all mean it needs building approval or a certifier. We'll tell you if your deck needs approval before you commit, so there are no surprises halfway through.
Is merbau a good timber for a pool deck?
Merbau is hard, stable and a rich red-brown, which is why it's so common around pools on the Gold Coast. New merbau bleeds tannin when it first gets wet, and that can stain light pavers and pool coping. It eases off as the timber weathers, and we'll talk you through how to manage it.
How often should I oil my deck?
It depends on how much sun and rain the deck gets. A deck in full Queensland sun needs oiling more often than one under a roof. A simple test: when water stops beading on the boards and soaks straight in, it's time for another coat.
Can you replace a few boards instead of the whole deck?
Usually, yes, as long as the joists underneath are sound. New boards look brighter than the old ones at first, but a full sand and oil brings them much closer together. If the frame is rotten, we'll show you before suggesting anything bigger.
What happens if you find termites under the deck?
We stop and show you. Rotten timber we can replace, but termite activity needs a pest controller to treat it before we rebuild. We don't do pest treatment ourselves, and we'll tell you if you need one.
Is a licensed carpenter building my deck?
Yes. Multi House Services is run by Isaac, a licensed carpenter, and holds QBCC Carpenter Contractor Licence 338940C. We're fully insured, and every new deck comes with a 3-month workmanship warranty.
