Made for your house
A custom door, from first sketch to final latch
Brisbane's older homes rarely take a standard door. Queenslanders, workers' cottages and interwar houses in suburbs like Paddington, Red Hill and Wilston often have taller or wider openings, frames that have moved over the decades, and a style a stock door can't match. A custom door is made to your exact opening, so it suits the house instead of being trimmed and packed to fit. It's also the way to get a real statement entry for a renovation or extension, like a wide pivot door or a timber door with glass sidelights.
There are three stages. First we design it with you: we measure the opening, look at the house and work through the timber, style, glass, finish and hardware. Then we have the door made to those measurements, and while it's being built we get the frame and floor ready so nothing holds up the install. Finally we hang it: frame packed plumb and square, pivots or hinges set, seals, lock and handle fitted, and the door finished so it's protected from day one. One fixed quote covers the lot.
Timber doors need looking after in Queensland. Humidity, summer storms and hot western sun make timber swell, shrink and turn grey. We seal all six edges before the door goes up, including the top and bottom nobody sees, because that's where moisture gets in. A door under a deep verandah then needs little more than a clean and a yearly check, while one facing the afternoon sun will need its oil or paint refreshed sooner, and we're happy to come back and recoat it. We do the same work on the Gold Coast, from Hope Island to Burleigh, where salt air is one more thing to plan for.
What we do
Design choices for your custom door
Timber species
Hardwoods like spotted gum, merbau and blackbutt for a natural oiled look, or a stable paint-grade timber when the door will be painted to match the house.
Pivot or hinged
Pivot doors suit wide, heavy openings and make a bold entrance but want shelter from driving rain. Hinged doors seal tighter and suit most Queenslander frontages.
Glazing & sidelights
Clear, frosted or reeded glass in the door, in sidelights or in a highlight window above, to bring light into a dark hallway and keep your privacy.
Style & profile
Vertical grooves, flush modern faces, or traditional panelled and VJ-style doors made to match the originals in a character home.
Finishes
Oiled to show the grain, stained, or primed and painted, with every edge sealed so the finish holds up in Brisbane's humidity.
Hardware
Tall pull handles, lever sets, deadlocks, pivot sets, hinges and weather seals, chosen to suit the size and weight of the door.
A custom door makes sense when…
- Your opening is an odd size and a stock door would need heavy trimming
- You're restoring a Queenslander or character home and want a door that suits its era
- You want a wide pivot or oversized entry door for a renovation or extension
- The original door is past saving but the house deserves more than a basic replacement
- You'd like glass sidelights or a highlight window to brighten the entry
- You're after a timber, grain or finish that off-the-shelf doors don't come in
What affects the price
- The timber species and the size of the door
- Pivot hardware or hinges, and any floor or frame work a pivot needs
- Glazing, sidelights and highlight windows
- Whether the existing frame is reused or a new one is made
- The finish, plus the handle, lock and seal choices
Send a photo of your entry, the rough size of the opening and a few pictures of doors you like. We'll talk through the options, then give you a fixed quote.
FAQ
Custom door questions
Should I choose a pivot door or a hinged door?
Pivot doors look striking on wide openings and carry a heavy door easily, but they don't seal as tightly as a hinged door. They work best under a verandah or deep eave. If your entry cops driving rain, a well-sealed hinged door is usually the better choice, and we'll tell you honestly which suits your house.
Which timber is best for a front door in Brisbane?
Dense hardwoods like spotted gum, merbau and blackbutt handle the humidity well and look great oiled. If you plan to paint the door, a stable paint-grade timber is often the smarter pick. We'll talk through how each one looks and ages before you decide.
How long does a custom door take?
Measuring and design usually take one visit. Making the door takes the longest, and the time depends on the design and the door maker, so we give you a realistic date when the order goes in. The install itself is usually a day, a little more for a pivot door or a new frame.
Can you match the original doors in my Queenslander?
Usually, yes. We measure and photograph your existing doors, note the panel layout, mouldings and hardware, and have a new door made to match. Old houses are rarely square, so we size it to suit the frame you actually have.
How do I look after a timber front door?
Keep it clean, check the finish once a year, and recoat an oiled door as soon as it starts to look dry or grey. Doors facing north or west in full sun need attention more often. If it starts to stick in summer, call us before forcing it, as it usually just needs an edge sealed or a small adjustment.
Will you install a custom door I've ordered elsewhere?
Yes. We can hang a door you've already had made, fit the hardware and finish it. Send us the maker's sizes and drawings before it's built, so we can check the frame and floor will be ready for it.
