Feature ceilings & TV walls

Plasterboard feature ceilings on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane

Recessed ceilings with a soft glow around the edge, bulkheads with hidden LED coves and TV walls with lit niches. We design and build them in plasterboard across the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Living room in the evening with a recessed plasterboard feature ceiling, warm LED cove lighting glowing around its edge, and a matching lit TV feature wall with floating shelf niches

Designer plaster

You see the light, never the fitting

A feature ceiling changes how a room feels at night. Instead of a grid of downlights, light washes out of a hidden cove or glows from behind a TV wall. It's precise plasterboard work: the lip of a cove has to sit at just the right depth so you see the glow and not the strip, and square set corners have to run dead straight with no cornice to hide anything.

Every job starts with a plan. We measure the room, check what's above the ceiling, like trusses and ducted air-con, and mark out the shapes so you can see the size before we build. Then we frame, sheet and set it ready for paint. For TV walls we plan around the screen, niches and shelves, with solid timber blocking for the bracket.

We build the plasterboard, cove channels and niches. The LED strips, drivers, dimmers and power points must be installed and connected by a licensed electrician. We can coordinate one, so cables go in before the sheets close up and the drivers stay accessible. Isaac does this work from our base in Hope Island, for new builds and renovations across the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

What we do

Feature work we design and build

  • Recessed feature ceilings

A raised or dropped centre panel with a hidden cove around the edge, sized to the room and marked out before we build.

  • Bulkheads with LED coves

Bulkheads over kitchens, along living rooms or around a room's edge, with a channel built in ready for strip lighting.

  • Curved bulkheads

Rounded and curved bulkhead shapes for a softer look, framed and set so the curve runs smooth from end to end.

  • TV feature walls

Built-out plasterboard walls with a recess for the TV, a cavity behind for cables and blocking in the frame for the bracket.

  • Lit niches and shelves

Floating shelf niches and display recesses with a slot for LED lighting, built into a TV wall, hallway or bedhead wall.

  • Square set finishes

Sharp, cornice-free corners where the walls meet the ceiling, for a clean modern line around the feature.

A feature ceiling suits your home when…

  • Your living room relies on a grid of downlights and feels flat at night
  • You want soft, indirect light for watching TV or winding down
  • An existing bulkhead hides ducts or beams and could become a feature
  • Cables, consoles and speakers are cluttering the TV area
  • You're renovating and want the ceiling to be part of the design
  • The room has good height and the ceiling is a big blank space

What affects the price

  • The size and shape of the design: straight, stepped or curved
  • How many coves, niches and shelves are included
  • Square set or cornice finish, and the height of the room
  • What's above the ceiling, such as ducts, trusses or existing wiring
  • Painting, plus the electrician's work, which is quoted separately

Send photos of the room, rough measurements and any inspiration pictures you like. We'll talk through the design with you and come back with a clear fixed quote.

FAQ

Feature ceiling questions

Do you install the LED lights too?

No. Connecting LED strips, drivers and dimmers is electrical work, and it must be done by a licensed electrician. We build the plasterboard and the channels, and we can coordinate a sparky so the wiring and our work happen in the right order.

Will I see the LED strip from the couch?

Not if the cove is built right. We set the depth and lip of the cove to suit where you'll be sitting and standing, so you see the glow on the ceiling rather than the strip itself.

Can you add a feature ceiling to an existing room?

Usually, yes. Most designs are built down from the existing ceiling, so the lowered parts lose a little height. We check your ceiling height and what's in the roof space before suggesting a design.

How do you hide the cables on a TV wall?

The wall is built out from the existing one, which leaves a cavity behind for cables. Your electrician runs the power before we sheet it, and any antenna or data cables go in at the same stage. We fit timber blocking so the TV bracket fixes into solid timber, not just plasterboard.

What does square set mean?

Square set means there's no cornice where the wall meets the ceiling. The corner is finished as a sharp, straight line with a bead set into the plaster. It looks clean and modern, but it shows any unevenness, so the framing has to be straight first.

How long does a feature ceiling take?

It's usually spread over several visits. Framing and sheeting go quickly, but each coat of setting compound needs to dry before the next, and the electrician has to fit in between. We'll give you a timeline on the quote.
