Brisbane

Brisbane decks are often well off the ground

A lot of Brisbane decks sit well above the ground. Highset homes, Queenslanders and houses on sloping blocks in suburbs like Mount Gravatt and Carindale often have a deck or verandah at floor level, with stairs down to the yard. That changes the job. Posts, bracing, stairs and balustrades matter as much as the boards, and a deck at that height may need building approval. We'll tell you if yours might, and point you to council, before any work starts.

Older Brisbane decks also hide more problems underneath. Timber that has sat close to damp soil for years can rot at the post bases and bearers, and termites are common around older homes. We check the frame first. If there's termite activity, a licensed pest controller needs to treat it before we rebuild, and we'll tell you straight whether the deck is worth saving. In newer Logan and Springwood estates, the job is more often a low deck off the back of the house.

Brisbane is a longer run from our Hope Island base, roughly 30 to 60 minutes up the M1 depending on where you are. A new deck or a full restoration takes more than one visit anyway, so the travel suits this kind of work. We plan the job ahead and get the materials sorted before we start. Send photos and rough measurements first, and we'll arrange a time to see it in person.

What we do

Deck work we do in Brisbane

  • Raised decks

Decks off highset and split-level homes, built on a level, well-braced frame with solid stairs and balustrades. We'll tell you early if the height of the deck or the way it attaches to the house means it may need approval.

  • Verandah boards and balustrades

Rotten or split verandah boards on Queenslanders and older timber homes replaced, and loose balustrades and handrails made solid. We match the board width where we can, and tell you before we start if an older profile isn't available.

  • Timber stairs

Front and back stairs on raised homes take the weather and constant wear. We replace soft treads and stringers, re-fix wobbly handrails, and rebuild the whole staircase where the old one isn't worth saving.

  • Decks on sloping blocks

Hilly backyards in Mount Gravatt, Carindale and nearby suburbs can make a deck the most usable part of the yard. We set out posts at varying heights so the frame sits level and the deck feels solid underfoot.

  • Low decks in newer estates

In Logan, Springwood and Beenleigh estates, a low deck off the back door or alfresco gives you an outdoor area without paving. We keep the frame clear of the ground with airflow underneath so it dries out after storms.

  • Frame repairs and restorations

Rotten bearers, sunken posts, lifted nails and boards gone grey. We repair or replace the failed parts of the frame, re-fix and sand the boards, and oil the deck so it's back to clean, solid timber.

Local conditions

What Brisbane decks are up against

  • Termites in older homes

Older timber homes around Brisbane are prone to termites, and decks and stairs that touch the ground are an easy way in. We don't treat termites. If we find activity, we stop and show you, and we rebuild once a licensed pest controller has treated it.

  • Clay soils and moving posts

Reactive clay swells after rain and shrinks in dry spells, and deck posts can sink or lean over time. A deck that has started to slope, bounce or pull away from the house often has a post or footing problem, so we check the footings before we look at the boards.

  • Hot summers and heavy storms

Away from the coast, Brisbane decks bake through hot summer days, then cop heavy afternoon storms. Boards dry out, split and cup, and water pools where the frame has sagged. Good board gaps, a frame that drains and regular oiling help the timber cope.

FAQ

Decks questions

Can you replace the stairs on my highset house?

Yes. We replace worn treads and stringers, re-fix handrails, or rebuild the whole staircase in hardwood or treated pine, depending on what suits the house. Stairs and balustrades are a safety matter, so we take care to set even risers and solid handrails. If the work may need approval, we'll tell you and point you to council.

My deck is attached to an old Queenslander. Can you rebuild it?

Usually. Older verandahs and decks are often joined to the house framing in ways newer builds aren't, so we check how it's attached and the condition of that timber first. If the house framing itself is rotten or termite-damaged, we'll show you and talk through what needs fixing before the new deck goes on.

Do you build decks in Brisbane even though you're on the Gold Coast?

Yes. Brisbane's south and east, plus Logan, Springwood and Beenleigh, are part of our regular area. It's a longer drive than our Gold Coast jobs, which is why we plan deck work ahead rather than fitting it in at short notice. A deck usually takes more than a single visit, so the travel rarely makes a difference to you.

Which timber suits a Brisbane deck in full sun?

Spotted gum and other dense Australian hardwoods handle Brisbane's hot sun well, and merbau is a popular choice for its rich colour. Treated pine is often used for the frame underneath. Whatever you choose, regular oiling stops the boards drying out and splitting. We'll talk through colour, budget and upkeep before you decide.
