Deck builder on the Gold Coast

Merbau pool decks, decks facing the canal, and tired boards brought back to life. We build and restore timber decks across the Gold Coast from our base in Hope Island.

Gold Coast

Built for sun, salt and pool water

Gold Coast decks lead a hard life. Full sun dries the boards out, summer storms soak them, and around the canals and the Broadwater, salt air works on every nail, screw and bracket. Pool decks get splashed with chlorinated or salt water all summer long. A deck that lasts here starts with a well-ventilated subframe, good hardwood boards and fixings suited to coastal conditions, followed by regular oiling to stop the timber greying and splitting.

The decks we're asked for change across the coast. In Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove, it's often a pool deck or an outdoor entertaining area that ties in with resort-style landscaping. In Paradise Point and Runaway Bay, canal homes want a deck that makes the most of the water. In newer Coomera and Helensvale estates, owners often want a deck off the alfresco to make a small backyard usable. Older beach houses around Burleigh Heads often have decks worth repairing rather than replacing.

Because we're local to the northern Gold Coast, it's easy for us to come out, measure up, check the subframe of an old deck and talk through timber choices on site. Merbau is the popular pick around pools, while spotted gum and other dense hardwoods also handle full sun well. Some decks, depending on their height and how they attach to the house, may need approval. We'll tell you if yours might and point you to council.

What we do

Deck work we do on the Gold Coast

  • Merbau pool decks

Boards scribed around the pool coping, fixed flush for bare feet and laid to fall away from the water. We plan around your pool fence from the start, and talk you through merbau tannin bleed onto pavers and coping before it happens.

  • Canal and waterfront decks

Decks facing the canal or the Broadwater, built with hardwood boards and stainless or other corrosion-resistant fixings that stand up to salt air. We check access early and tell you if anything about the site means it may need approval.

  • Decks off the alfresco

In newer estates, a timber deck off the alfresco or family room turns a bare backyard into somewhere to sit. We set the deck height to suit your doors, keep airflow under the frame and leave the boards ready to oil.

  • Salt and sun restorations

Boards gone grey and rough, nails rusting and lifting, the old finish flaking off. We re-fix loose boards with screws, swap out the worst ones, sand the whole deck back to clean timber and re-oil it so the colour comes back.

  • Board and frame repairs

Soft boards, a rotten joist under the barbecue, a bouncy section near the door. We open up the problem area, replace what's failed with matching timber and tell you honestly whether the rest of the frame has years left in it.

  • Steps and landings

Timber steps down from the deck to the lawn or the pool area, rebuilt solid with even risers and treads that don't move underfoot, using fixings chosen to last in a coastal backyard.

Local conditions

What Gold Coast decks are up against

  • Salt air on fixings

Close to the beach or the Broadwater, ordinary nails and screws can rust and leave black stains around each fixing. Stainless fixings cost more up front but hold up far better in coastal suburbs like Paradise Point, Runaway Bay and Surfers Paradise, and they won't bleed rust into the boards.

  • Pool water and constant wetting

Pool decks are splashed, dry out in the sun and get splashed again, day after day. That cycle opens up the timber and lifts boards. Good gaps between boards, a frame that drains and dries quickly, and regular oiling help a pool deck stay flat and splinter-free.

  • Strong sun and summer storms

Gold Coast sun bleaches decks grey quickly, then summer storms dump heavy rain on timber that's already dried out. Decks in full sun need oiling more often than covered ones, so we'll suggest a timber and finish that suits how exposed your deck will be.

FAQ

Decks questions

Which timber holds up best near the canal?

Dense Australian hardwoods like spotted gum and blackbutt, and merbau, all perform well near the water when they're fixed with stainless screws and oiled regularly. In salt air, the fixings matter as much as the timber. We'll talk through colour, budget and how much upkeep you're happy with before you choose.

Can you build a deck around my existing pool?

Usually, yes. We measure the pool, the coping and the surrounding levels, then set the deck at the right height and fall it away from the water. We also look closely at your pool fence, because a deck that changes the fence height or gives a child a foothold is a safety problem. We'll point you to council if the fence needs checking.

Do you come and see the deck before quoting?

For new decks and bigger repairs, yes. On the northern Gold Coast we're close by, so it's easy to come out, check the ground, the levels and the frame of any old deck, and measure up properly. For small repairs, a few clear photos and rough measurements are often enough for us to quote from.

Do you build decks on the southern Gold Coast?

Yes. Most of our deck work is on the northern Gold Coast, close to our Hope Island base, but we also build and restore decks in Southport, Surfers Paradise, Robina and Burleigh Heads. A deck usually takes more than a quick visit, so the extra drive is rarely a problem. Send photos and your suburb and we'll get back to you.
