Fly screen repair on the Gold Coast

Midges off the canals, sand in the screen door track and mesh gone brittle in the sun. We repair and re-mesh fly screens across the Gold Coast, so you can leave the house open on warm nights.

Gold Coast

Screens that suit where you live

Living on the Gold Coast means opening the house up for most of the year, and the screens decide how comfortable that is. Near the canals, the Coomera River and the mangrove edges around Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove, biting midges come through standard mesh at dusk. Close to the beach in Burleigh Heads and Surfers Paradise, sand and salt wear out screen door rollers and turn aluminium frames chalky. In the family estates of Coomera and Helensvale, it's dogs and kids pushing straight through the bottom of the screen door.

So the fix isn't always the same mesh going back in. On a screen facing the water, we might suggest a finer midge mesh. On a sliding screen door that the dog leans on, pet mesh across the bottom half or the whole door. On a window that just tore when it was pulled out for cleaning, standard mesh re-rolled tight into new spline is all it needs. We look at each screen, tell you whether to re-mesh or replace, and quote the lot together.

We're based in Hope Island, so the northern Gold Coast is a short trip and we cover Southport, Surfers Paradise, Robina and Burleigh Heads on planned visits. For holiday lets and rentals, we can count the screens, re-mesh what's worth saving and make up new ones where frames are bent, all in one go before the next guests or tenants arrive.

What we do

Fly screen work we do on the Gold Coast

  • Midge mesh near the water

Finer mesh for windows and doors on canal, river and mangrove-side homes where midges and sandflies slip through standard mesh in the evening. It cuts airflow a little, so we usually fit it where the bugs are worst.

  • Sliding screen doors off track

Screen doors onto the deck or pool that drag, jump the track or won't close, usually from sand in the track and worn rollers. We clean and straighten the track, fit new rollers and set the door to slide freely.

  • Pet mesh for family homes

Tough pet mesh on screen doors and low windows in homes with dogs and cats, common in the newer Coomera, Pimpama and Helensvale estates where the back door is opened all day.

  • Brittle and sun-damaged mesh

Screens on the western side of the house where the sun has made the mesh brittle and the spline has shrunk. We strip them back and re-mesh with fresh spline so they sit tight and flat again.

  • Corroded or bent frames

Aluminium frames near the beach and the Broadwater that have corroded at the corners, or bent from being knocked out in a storm. Where re-meshing won't save them, we make up new screens to size.

  • Screens for rentals and holiday lets

A whole-house screen check between tenants or guests in Southport, Surfers Paradise and Burleigh Heads, with torn screens re-meshed, missing ones replaced and screen doors adjusted to close properly.

Local conditions

What wears out Gold Coast fly screens

  • Midges and sandflies

Around the canals, rivers and mangroves of the northern Gold Coast, biting midges are small enough to get through ordinary insect mesh. Finer mesh on the screens you open most at dusk makes a real difference, though it does let through a little less breeze.

  • Sand, salt and wind

Near the beach and on windy balconies, sand packs into screen door tracks and salt corrodes rollers and frame corners. Strong afternoon breezes also slam screen doors. A clean track, new rollers and a closer on hinged screens solve most of it.

  • Sun on the mesh

Strong Gold Coast sun breaks down mesh and rubber spline, especially on screens that face west. Mesh that crumbles when you press it, or has pulled away from the edge of the frame, is past patching and needs re-meshing.

FAQ

Fly screens questions

Will finer mesh keep midges out of my canal home?

It helps a lot. Standard insect mesh lets some midges through, while a finer mesh blocks most of them. It does reduce airflow and visibility slightly, so many owners fit it on the doors and windows they open at dusk and keep standard mesh elsewhere. We can show you samples before you decide.

Can you repair upstairs window screens?

Yes. Most upstairs screens can be removed from inside, re-meshed and refitted. Some fixed screens, or ones in high windows over a void, are harder to reach, so tell us where they are and send a photo. We'll let you know how we'll get to them when we quote.

Why does my screen door keep blowing open?

On the Gold Coast, afternoon sea breezes catch hinged screen doors and either slam them or hold them open. A worn latch or a door that has dropped makes it worse. We adjust the door, replace the latch if needed and can fit a closer so it shuts gently and stays shut.

Can you redo all the screens in my rental before new tenants move in?

Yes. Send us a count of the screens, photos of the damaged ones and the date the property is empty. We'll quote them all together, re-mesh what's worth keeping and make up new screens for any bent or missing frames.
