Feature ceilings on the Gold Coast

A glowing cove over the living room of a new Pimpama home, a bulkhead that turns a duct into a feature, or a TV wall with lit niches in the media room. We build feature ceilings across the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast

Giving a plain ceiling some character

Many newer Gold Coast homes are handed over with flat ceilings and rows of downlights throughout. In the estates around Coomera, Upper Coomera, Pimpama and Helensvale, a recessed ceiling with an LED cove over the living area, or a bulkhead running along the kitchen island, is one of the most popular ways to make an open-plan space feel finished. In larger homes in Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove, higher ceilings give room for deeper recesses, stepped designs and curves.

On the Gold Coast, the first thing we check is often the air-conditioning. Most homes here have ducted systems, with ducts and outlets running through the roof space and sometimes already boxed into a bulkhead. A good design works with them: we can build a feature bulkhead around existing ducting, and plan coves and recesses so outlets and return air grilles still sit in sensible places. We also check trusses, existing wiring and ceiling height before marking anything out.

We build the framing, plasterboard, cove channels and niches, and finish them ready for paint. The LED strips, drivers, dimmers and any new power must be installed by a licensed electrician, and we can coordinate one so the wiring goes in at the right stage. Because setting compound dries slowly in humid weather, a feature ceiling is usually spread over several visits, and being based in Hope Island makes that easy on the northern Gold Coast.

What we do

Feature ceiling work on the Gold Coast

  • Cove ceilings in new homes

Recessed or dropped ceiling panels with a hidden LED cove over living and dining areas in newer homes, sized to the room and marked out first so you can see the shape before we frame it.

  • Bulkheads around ducted air-con

Turning an existing duct bulkhead into a feature, or building a new one that hides ducting, with a lit edge or shadow line and air-con outlets planned into the design.

  • Kitchen island bulkheads

Bulkheads over the kitchen island or benchtop, framed to line up with the cabinetry below, with space for pendant or strip lighting for your electrician to connect.

  • Media room TV walls

Built-out TV walls with a recess for the screen, a cavity for cables and timber blocking for the bracket, popular in the media rooms and rumpus rooms of family homes on the northern Gold Coast.

  • Stepped and curved designs

Multi-level and curved ceilings for larger rooms with good height, common in Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove homes, framed carefully so the curves run smooth and the steps stay level.

  • Bedhead and hallway niches

Lit niches behind a bed, along a hallway or beside the entry, with a slot built in for LED strip so the light washes across the wall rather than shining into your eyes.

Local conditions

Planning a feature ceiling here

  • Ducted air-con in the roof

Ducts, outlets and return air grilles take up a lot of space in Gold Coast ceilings. We check where they run before designing anything, because moving them is a job for an air-conditioning technician and adds cost. Usually the design can work around them.

  • Ceiling height in new estates

Many homes in the newer northern estates have standard-height ceilings. A feature that drops down too far can make the room feel lower. A shallow cove or a raised recess between the trusses often gives the look without losing much height, and we'll show you the options.

  • Humid drying times

Each coat of compound on a feature ceiling needs to dry before the next, and sharp square set corners show any shortcut. On humid Gold Coast days that takes longer, so we plan the work across several visits rather than rushing the finish.

FAQ

Feature ceilings & bulkheads questions

Can I have a cove ceiling with ducted air-con?

Usually, yes. We check where the ducts and outlets run in the roof space and plan the cove around them. If an outlet sits right where the feature needs to go, an air-conditioning technician may need to move it, and we'll tell you before you commit to the design.

Will a feature ceiling work in a standard-height room?

It can. In rooms without much height, a raised recess built up between the trusses, or a slim cove around the edge, keeps the room feeling open. We measure your ceiling and check the roof space before suggesting a design that suits.

Do you organise the electrician?

We can. The LED lighting, drivers, dimmers and any power points have to be installed by a licensed electrician. We coordinate with one so the cabling goes in after our framing and before the sheets close up, and their work is quoted separately from ours.

Can you build a feature ceiling in a Gold Coast apartment?

Sometimes. Many apartment ceilings sit directly under a concrete slab with little space above, which limits what can be recessed. A dropped bulkhead or a TV wall is often still possible. Check with your body corporate before any building work, and send us photos so we can look at the options.
