Fly screen repair in Brisbane

Brisbane summers mean open windows, and open windows mean mozzies. We re-mesh screens, make new ones for louvres and sliders, and fix screen doors across Brisbane's south and east and Logan.

Brisbane

Screens for a city that lives with its windows open

Plenty of older Brisbane homes were built to catch the breeze, with louvres, casement windows and big openings onto the verandah. Post-war homes on the south side often still have banks of glass louvres, and their screens sit on the inside, where they get pushed, bumped and pulled out for cleaning. In 1970s to 90s brick homes from Sunnybank to Springwood, the aluminium window screens have had decades of sun and the mesh crumbles at a touch. Newer homes in Logan's estates usually came with screens, but kids, pets and window cleaning take their toll.

Most Brisbane screen jobs are a mix: a few windows to re-mesh, one bent frame to remake, a sliding screen door that keeps jumping its track and a door the dog has pushed through. Where creeks and bushland run through the suburbs, like Bulimba Creek near Carindale or along the Logan River, mosquitoes are a real summer problem. In bayside suburbs like Wynnum and Manly, midges can get through standard mesh, and we'll suggest finer mesh where that's an issue.

Screens are small jobs, so they're worth bundling. We're based in Hope Island, roughly half an hour from Beenleigh and up to an hour from the eastern suburbs, and we book Brisbane visits on set days rather than same-day. Count every screen in the house, photograph the damaged ones with a rough size, and we'll quote them together. If there's a sticking door or a loose handle on the list as well, add it in.

What we do

Fly screen work we do in Brisbane

  • Louvre window screens

Screens for banks of glass louvres in post-war homes and Queenslanders, re-meshed or remade to size. We make sure they clip in and out easily, because louvre screens come out for cleaning more often than most.

  • Old aluminium window screens

Screens in 70s to 90s homes where the mesh has gone brittle and the spline has shrunk. If the frame is straight, we re-mesh it. If the corners have cracked or the frame is bent, we make a new screen to fit.

  • Sliding screen doors

Patio screen doors on brick and estate homes that drag, jump their track or won't latch. New rollers, a straightened track and a proper adjustment usually have them running with one finger again.

  • Hinged screen doors

Hinged screen doors on front and back entries re-meshed, rehung so they swing freely and fitted with a latch that catches. If an old timber screen door on a Queenslander is past repair, we'll talk through a replacement.

  • Pet mesh

Heavier pet-resistant mesh for homes where the dog or cat has worked out how to push through the screen door. Because it's thicker and harder to see through, we normally use it only where paws and claws can reach.

  • Finer mesh near creeks and the bay

Finer mesh for bedrooms and living areas in homes near creeks, bushland or the bayside mangroves, where standard mesh still lets midges and other small biting insects through.

Local conditions

What Brisbane is hard on screens

  • Western sun

Screens on west-facing windows bake through Brisbane's hot afternoons, and standard mesh goes brittle faster there than on the shady side of the house. It's often worth re-meshing the sunny side first and checking the rest while we're there.

  • Storm gusts

Summer storms bring strong, sudden gusts, and loose screens can be pulled out of the frame or bent. Screens that fit snugly, with working clips or retainers, stay put when the wind picks up and keep doing their job afterwards.

  • Highset and two-storey windows

Upstairs windows on highset homes and two-storey houses in Carindale or Shailer Park are hard to reach from outside. We take screens out from inside where the window allows, and tell you before the visit if any screen needs ladder access.

FAQ

Fly screens questions

Can you make screens for old louvre windows?

Yes. Louvre screens usually sit on the inside of the window, held by clips or a channel. If the old frame is still sound, we re-mesh it. If it's missing or broken, we measure the opening and make a new screen to suit.

Why does my mesh crumble when I touch it?

Years of sun break down standard fibreglass mesh, and in Brisbane's heat that happens faster on west and north-facing windows. Once it's brittle it can't be patched. Re-meshing the frame with new mesh and spline fixes it, as long as the frame is still straight.

Is it worth getting just one screen fixed in Brisbane?

On its own, one screen is hard to justify with the drive from Hope Island, and it wouldn't be good value for you. Most homes have more than one screen that needs work once you look, so walk around and check every window and screen door, then send them through together.

What mesh is best for midges near the bay?

Standard insect mesh keeps out mosquitoes and flies, but midges are small enough to get through it. A finer midge mesh helps in bayside homes near Wynnum and Manly, or near mangroves and wetlands. It cuts airflow a little, so we often suggest it for bedrooms rather than every window.
