Brisbane
One carpenter for old timber and new builds
Brisbane's south and east has more variety in its housing than most places we work. Within a few streets of Coorparoo or Holland Park you'll find Queenslanders on stumps, post-war timber and fibro homes and 1970s to 90s brick houses, with newer estates further out in Rochedale, Logan and around Beenleigh. Each era has its own timber, its own fixings and its own habits. A carpenter who knows what's likely to be behind a wall before opening it saves you time and money.
That's the range we cover. On older homes it's weatherboards, verandah boards, window sills, VJ walls, stairs and trims that are worth repairing or matching rather than ripping out, and timber that needs replacing once a pest controller has dealt with termites. On newer homes and renovations it's framing non-structural walls, build-under rooms, batten screens, skirting and architraves. We also do doors, decks, timber fences, built-in wardrobes and plasterboard. Where a wall carries load from the roof or floor above, an engineer has to be involved, and we'll say so at the quote, not halfway through the job.
If you're searching for a local carpenter, it's fair to know where we're coming from. Our base is Hope Island, at the northern end of the Gold Coast, which puts Brisbane 30 to 60 minutes away depending on the suburb, with Beenleigh and Loganholme at the near end and Carindale and the bayside at the far end. We group Brisbane-side carpentry on set days and book it ahead, so we can't offer same-day call-outs. What you get instead is a QBCC licensed carpenter with more than 26 years of experience, who arrives with the right timber already on the ute.
What we do
Carpentry we do in Brisbane
Weatherboards and window sills
Rotten weatherboards, sills and window reveals on Queenslanders and post-war homes cut out and replaced with timber matched to the existing profile. We prime and seal every new piece, cut ends included, and tell you upfront if an old profile is no longer made.
VJ walls and timber linings
Split, holed or water-damaged VJ boards on walls and ceilings replaced with boards in a matching or close profile. We patch them in so the wall reads as one surface once it's painted, rather than covering the damage with a sheet of gyprock.
Trims that suit the house
Skirting, architraves and picture rails in older homes are often profiles you can't buy off the shelf. We match them as closely as we can, sometimes by combining stock mouldings, so a new door or repaired wall doesn't look like an add-on.
Timber after termite damage
After termite treatment by a licensed pest controller, we remove and renew damaged door frames, skirting, stair parts and sections of floor framing. We don't treat termites, and we'll show you what we find as we open things up.
Build-unders and new walls
Non-structural stud walls, door openings and trims for rooms built in under a highset home. We'll tell you if your plans may need approval or an engineer and point you to council, and we plan our work around the electrician and plumber.
Batten screens and feature timber
Timber batten screens on stairs, entries and between rooms, popular in renovated Queenslanders and newer homes alike. We space them to suit the opening and the light you want through it, and fix them top and bottom so they stay plumb.
Local conditions
What Brisbane homes ask of a carpenter
Hardwood that fights back
Older Brisbane homes are usually framed in hardwood, often in sizes and spacings that don't match today's timber. Old hardwood is hard to fix into and splits if you rush it, so we pre-drill, pack and adjust rather than forcing standard parts to fit.
Houses renovated in stages
Many Brisbane homes have been added to over the decades, so one house can have original hardwood, 1970s pine and modern framing side by side. We check what we're working with before we quote, so the price reflects the house you've actually got.
Weather-facing timber
Brisbane's summer storms hit hard and fast, and the exposed timber cops it: west-facing weatherboards, window sills, verandah edges and the bottoms of external stairs. Repairing soft spots before the wet season, and sealing every cut end, stops the rot spreading into the frame.

FAQ
Carpentry questions
Are you a local carpenter if you're based on the Gold Coast?
We're not around the corner, and we won't pretend to be. We're based in Hope Island, and Brisbane's south and east and Logan City are a regular part of our work, booked on set days. For most carpentry the distance makes no difference to the result, as long as you don't need a same-day call-out.
Do you do structural carpentry?
We do small structural carpentry, like replacing a rotten stud, bottom plate or section of floor framing, and framing openings in non-load-bearing walls. Anything that changes how the house carries load, such as removing a load-bearing wall, raising the house or restumping, needs an engineer or a specialist trade. We'll tell you if your job falls into that group.
Can you match the weatherboards on my house?
Often, yes. Many common weatherboard profiles are still made, and we can usually find a close match for a patch repair. Where the profile isn't available, we'll suggest options, like replacing a full section so the change falls at a corner or window where it won't stand out.
How do I get a carpentry quote for a Brisbane job?
Send photos of the job, your suburb and a rough measurement if it's easy to get. Small repairs can often be quoted from photos. For bigger work like a build-under or a run of weatherboards, we'll book a visit to measure on one of our Brisbane days, then give you a fixed quote.
