Post-war homes on hilly streets

Mount Gravatt, in Brisbane's south, grew quickly after the Second World War, and many streets still have homes from that time: timber and fibro houses, both lowset and highset, with brick homes from the 1960s to 80s mixed in. The suburb is hilly, with the mountain and its lookout in the middle, so plenty of homes sit on sloping blocks with long stairs, under-house areas and decks. Many have been renovated, raised or built in underneath, while others are still close to original.

That gives us a mix of old and new work. On original homes we repair timber stairs, door frames and window reveals, rehang old doors that have dropped, and make or source custom doors for openings that aren't a standard size. On renovations we do the carpentry and plasterboard: framing and sheeting non-structural walls in a build-under, hanging doors, and fitting skirting and architraves that suit the original rooms upstairs. Wiring and plumbing are for licensed electricians and plumbers, and we work around them.

From our Hope Island base, Mount Gravatt is roughly 45 minutes to an hour up the M1, so we group Brisbane jobs on set days. If you're looking for a carpenter near Mount Gravatt, Mount Gravatt East or Holland Park, send us photos and a rough idea of the job. For renovation work, a sketch or your plans help us quote accurately, and we'll tell you what we need to see in person.

What we see here

Mount Gravatt homes and what they need

  • Build-under rooms

Building in underneath a highset home is a common upgrade here. We frame and sheet non-structural stud walls, hang doors, and fit skirting and architraves. Raising a house or changing its structure involves an engineer, so we'll tell you where our part of the job starts and ends.

  • Matching old trims

Post-war homes often have architrave and skirting profiles that aren't common anymore. When we hang new doors or patch walls, we find the closest stock profile, or reuse sound original timber, so the room still looks like it belongs to the house.

  • Doors in odd openings

Older openings are often a little out of square or an unusual size. We trim and fit stock doors where that works, and recommend a custom door where it doesn't, so the door closes properly instead of being forced into a frame it doesn't suit.

  • Stairs on sloping blocks

Hilly blocks mean long runs of external timber stairs and landings. Treads, stringers and handrails rot where water sits on them. We replace damaged parts with treated pine or hardwood to suit, and fix loose handrails so they're solid to hold again.

FAQ

Questions from Mount Gravatt

Can you finish the inside of our build-under?

We can do the carpentry and plasterboard: non-structural stud walls, sheeting, cornice, internal doors, skirting and architraves. Structural work, wiring and plumbing belong to an engineer, electrician and plumber. We'll tell you if your job may need approval and point you to council, and we can plan our work around the other trades.

Can you match the doors in my older Mount Gravatt home?

Often we can get close. Many post-war homes have simple flush or panelled doors, and similar styles are still made. Where the opening is an unusual size or you want a particular look, a custom door is the better option. Send us a photo of the door you want to match, with its height and width.

Do you fix external timber stairs?

Yes. We replace rotten treads, damaged stringers and loose handrails on timber stairs and landings. If the whole staircase has gone soft, rebuilding is usually better value than patching it piece by piece. Send photos of the stairs from the side and from underneath, and we'll tell you which way we'd go.
