Door installation in Brisbane

A houseful of tired hollow-core doors, a front door that has to cope with storm season, or doors for a new build-under. We supply and hang doors across Brisbane's south and east and Logan.

Brisbane

Every era of Brisbane home hangs a door differently

Door installs on the Brisbane side vary a lot with the age of the house. In the 1970s to 90s brick homes of Sunnybank, Eight Mile Plains and Springwood, internal openings are usually close to standard, and the common job is replacing a full set of original hollow-core doors in their existing frames. In Queenslanders and post-war homes, openings are often taller or narrower than stock sizes and the frames have moved, so each door is fitted to its own opening. Newer estate homes in Rochedale and Logan tend to want an upgrade, like a solid front door or a cavity slider.

Hanging a new door in an old frame comes down to the details. The old hinge cut-outs rarely line up with a new door, so we decide whether to match the existing hinge positions or fill the old ones and cut fresh. The latch and strike get the same treatment. Every cut edge is sealed before the door goes up, which matters in a Brisbane summer, when an unsealed door can soak up humidity and start binding within a season.

Our base is at Hope Island, so Brisbane is a 30 to 60 minute drive for us, so door jobs here are planned ahead and done on set days rather than same-day. That suits door work well. We measure every opening on the first visit, order the doors and hardware, then come back to hang them together, so several doors can be done in the one trip.

What we do

Doors we install in Brisbane

  • A full set of internal doors

Original hollow-core doors replaced throughout a 70s, 80s or 90s home, hung in the existing frames with matching handles at an even height. Doing them all together gives you consistent gaps and one look through the house.

  • Doors for odd-sized openings

Queenslander and post-war openings that don't match stock sizes. We trim a standard door where there's enough timber to take off, and tell you when a made-to-measure door is the better option rather than cutting a stock door down too far.

  • Front doors for storm season

Solid timber and solid-core entry doors with good seals, a sealed bottom edge and a weather strip, for front and back doors that face the afternoon storms with little shelter from a porch or verandah.

  • French doors and pairs

New pairs of French doors onto a verandah or deck, hung in the existing opening or a new one in a non-load-bearing wall. Both doors are set to meet evenly in the middle, with bolts and seals so the pair closes and locks tight.

  • Build-under and extension doors

Internal doors for rooms built in under a highset home or in an extension, hung in new frames with architraves chosen to sit comfortably with the original rooms in the rest of the house.

  • Door and frame replacements

When the old jamb is soft at the bottom or termite-damaged, the frame comes out with the door and a new one goes in, so the new door has something true to close against. Any termite activity needs treating by a pest controller first.

Local conditions

What affects a door install in Brisbane

  • Floors that slope

Older homes on stumps and houses on reactive clay often have floors that fall a little across a doorway. We scribe the bottom of the door to the floor, so the gap underneath looks even rather than tapering, and check it clears rugs and tiles.

  • Humidity and sealing

Brisbane's humid summers are hard on new doors. A door with an unsealed top or bottom edge takes up moisture and swells, and many door makers expect every edge to be sealed. We prime or seal all six edges as part of the install.

  • Exposed entries

Front and back doors on lowset brick homes often sit under only a small porch, and Brisbane's afternoon storms drive rain straight at them. A door suited to that exposure, with good seals and a weather strip at the base, matters more than how it looks.

FAQ

Door installation questions

Can you replace all the doors in my house in one visit?

Often, yes, depending on how many doors there are and whether the frames need work. We measure every opening first, order the doors, and come back to hang them together. Doing them in one go keeps the gaps, handles and finish consistent from room to room.

Should I replace hollow-core doors with solid-core?

For bedrooms and studies, a solid-core door blocks noticeably more noise and feels more solid when it closes. It's heavier, so we check the frame and use stronger hinges. For linen and laundry cupboards, hollow-core is usually fine.

Do I need to keep the old door frames?

Not always. If a frame is sound and close to square, keeping it is quicker and avoids patching the plaster around the opening. If it's rotten, split or badly out, a new frame with the door is the better fix, and we'll show you which frames fall into which group.

Can you match new doors to the old ones I'm keeping?

Usually. Flush and simple panelled doors are still widely made, so if you're only replacing a few, we can find a close match in style and thickness. We'll fit matching or similar handles too, so the new doors don't stand out from the rest.
